Are you addicted to drama? Cycles of tension and resolution may mimic growth. But true growth is linear, not cyclical. Drama is not growth. It’s just drama.
Growth implies movement towards something. In relationship, growth is the movement towards unconditional love. You will know when you are moving towards unconditional love when your relationships become more peaceful.
Many adults who had a tumultuous childhood tend to equate growth with struggle and hardship. It’s true that challenge is a necessary part of growth. Struggle and hardship are not. Core wounding patterns developed in early childhood show up as cycles of upheaval in future relationships. But this is not as it is meant to be.
Model your growth after nature. Plants grow best in an environment where they receive sunlight, rain and nutrients. Animals grow best in an environment where they have access to food and room to roam freely. Children thrive in a compassionate, nurturing environment where they feel safe to express creativity and explore. Why should healthy adults be any different? Why do so many adults equate growth with pain?
Drama is created through the need to re-enact early wounding patterns. You will recognize these wounding patterns because they make you feel stuck, as if you’ve hit a brick wall.
The next time you encounter that wall, feel my loving presence beside you. Feel my arm gently draped around your shoulder as we look at the wall together. How high is it? What is it made of? Where did it come from? Together, let’s shine the light of love and acceptance on that wall.
No amount of force, brute strength or discipline will make the wall move. Surround yourself with human companions, be it friends or loved ones, who have the courage to face the wall with you. With gentle, tender pressure, you will discover the wall itself is an illusion, one that is hiding the fullness your love, the radiance of your most authentic self. And the pure majesty of this love, precious child, is an easy trade for the drama.
